I'm coming close to being 66% through my first year of doing this here comic blog! And despite the name there have not been very many bikes to be seen. So, why not dedicate an entire week to them?

Grazing In The Grass.

Today's song is Hugh Masekela's  instrumental version of 'Grazing in the Grass.'

It is a little bit of a cheesy song, but perhaps what he is most well known for here in the states. I saw him perform today in Central Park, and even at 72 he has a lot of life and joy in him and was a lot of fun to watch.

He led an interesting life in which he fled South Africa, ended up studying and playing trumpet in New York for years, before eventually returning to South Africa to reconnect with his roots and help build the community through music. He was even married to the South African singer/civil rights activist Miriam Makeba.

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm told that the documentary Amandla!, which is about using music for social change during Apartheid in South Africa and features both Makeba and Masekela, is excellent.

Tonight's song is 'Patches' as covered by Clarence Carter.

The song was originally recorded by Chairmen of the Board, which was the headlining act for the Invictus/Hot Wax label, who are most well known for their hit 'Give Me Just A Little More Time.' Clarence Carter's cover came out the same year as the Chairmen of the Board's original recording, 1970, but it was Carters version that became a Top 10 hit and received a Grammy in 1971 for Best R&B Song.

Walk On By.

Tonights song is 'Walk on By' performed by Isaac Hayes. This song was originally penned by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Dionne Warwick in 1964. It became a big hit for her, reaching number six on the Billboard charts. Five years later is when Isaac Hayes would turn it into a twelve minute jam, though the single version reduced it down to under five minutes. It peaked at number thirty on the charts for Hayes. Since then there have been covers done in the style of punk, boogie, electronic, garage rock, and various other styles. Seal is the most recent example (2005) of someone who covered the song and saw it chart, though only in the low to mid range of various European Countries charts.

And I just want to make another announcement about the Dear Japan show I'm apart of and that is coming up in New York this Saturday. 

The show runs from 4-8 at the Art Connect Gallery (491 Broadway,) is a cash and carry show (pay for the piece and take it off the wall and take it home on the spot kind of deal,) and is for a great cause (benefits aid for Japan relief!)

It's a pretty incredible line up of people, 170 artists have contributed pieces, and you can see most of the pieces online now at the Dear Japan site:
