The Gravel Pit.

I'm Out The Door.

Musical selection of the day comes from the Stax stable. Perhaps best known these days for being sampled by Wu-Tang Clan for 'Tearz' on the Enter the 36 Chambers album. Wendy Rene actually recorded some great tunes back in the day. Her stage name was given to her by Otis Redding and she was supposed to be on the flight that ended in Redding's untimely death, but chose to stay home with her newborn instead. Unfortunately, she never recorded a proper album, the closest thing was 8 tracks on the You Thrill My Soul compilation which didn't come out until 1995. This is one of my favorites, and actually appeared on the aforementioned compilation. Here is Wendy Rene's 'Gone For Good':

And as a bonus, here is the track that Wu-Tang Clan sampled, 'After Laughter':

Sad Cat Saturday.

Cat had an ear hematoma today. Basically he scratched his ear too hard and caused a blood vessel to burst, making it swell up all crazy. It looked like swollen blister ear death. He got it drained and is okay now though.

Frankenstein.

Todays musical selection comes from a Florida soul songstress that was discovered by another Florida soul songstress. Gwen McCrae sang in a duo with her husband, George McCrae, when Betty Wright (of 'Clean Up Woman' fame) took a liking to them. Betty helped sign them to the label she was on, Alston, where they started to work with Clarence Reid. I did a post about Clarence Reid awhile ago,  (December 5th, post called 'Cold Blooded,') where I mentioned he wrote some great songs for other people. Here is one of Gwen McCrae's solo ventures penned by Reid. Here is the laid back groove of '90% Of Me Is You':

And as a bonus, here is Betty Wright's 'Clean Up Woman,' which was penned by Clarence Reid and Willie Clarke:

What If...?

This week is going to be all about 'What If...?' stories. In case you don't know about the Marvel 'What If...?' series, basically it was a way for people to make hypothetical stories that would not be a part of regular continuity. I always thought it was kind of a cool idea.

Le Voyage Dans La Lune

Today we have a cover. This song was originally called 'In Other Words' but had the name changed to 'Fly Me To The Moon' later. Typically it's sung as a laid back lounge type jam, but one of James Browns Funky Divas took it to booty shaking territory. Here is the Lyn Collins version of 'Fly Me To The Moon':

Triple Down.

How about ending the week with 3 drawings? Don't worry, I'll answer for you and say, 'Okay.'

and

Since I used an uncommon usage for 'tweedy' here is a link to a definition:

Most other places I've found use the 'casual or informal' definition, and clearly that does not really reflect what is happening in that joke. Wait...am I over explaining a Tweety Pie joke?

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Duplicity.

This week is going to be all about fun word play, huzzah!
And, now that the show is over, it should be safe to show everyone the piece that I contributed to the Visual AIDS show.

It's called 'You're All I Need To Get By'

J-E-L-L-O

The music this week is provided by your favorite pudding salesman, Bill Cosby. This is the theme from Bill Cosby's first solo TV series, pre-Huxtable and post I-Spy, on which Quincy Jones served as the musical director. It was a good idea to get Quincy on board because he put together a pretty great group of artists to provide the music. Jimmy Smith, Les McCann, Joe Sample, and Milt Jackson are just a few of the musicians that helped out. But, here is Bill doing some of his patented crazy noises scat style over the jam provided on 'Hikky-Burr.'

And as a bonus here is another one of the tracks that came from the sessions for The Bill Cosby Show.

Also, YEAH SEAHAWKS!!!!!

It Had To Be Snakes.

Just as Snowman Week is ending a new round of snowman making material is falling from the sky. Hooray!
Looking through this weeks stuff, apparently Greek mythology is somehow closely tied with snowmen in my brain...

Oh! I almost forgot! I'm also in an awesome benefit show with over 1,400 pieces in it called Visual AIDS. They sell the artwork anonymously so people buy it based off of looks instead of names which is pretty sweet.  Click on the link below for all the info and names of the artists who will be in the show.

Come On Baby...

Fun (Possibly) True Fact of the Day: According to the ever reliable Wikipeida, Jimi Hendrix played his first gig in the basement of Temple De Hirsch, which is where I went to middle school and a year or two of high school. Neat-o!

More Like Mong-SNOW-lians!

The post title is way more hilarious now that you've read todays entry...right?

Feels good to have my watercolors back.

Ho ho ho, Snow Giant!

To celebrate all the snowfall everywhere how about a week of stuff about snowmen and the impressive stuff people have done with them.

Hopefully I will be back to coloring in stuff tomorrow.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

First music jam of the year is going to go to the Isley Brothers using a disguise name for their third single released on T-Neck records. This 45 was released under the name of The Brothers Three, a name that, as far as I can find, they never used again. So, here is 'Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out'.
(Sound quality is not the best and it starts around the 15 second mark, but worth the wait.)

WOOOOOOOO!!!! *barf*

Hope everyone had a great time last night. Time to kick off this year of drawings with something I didn't really put any pencil to paper for...it's a self portrait by the way.
