Today's song is Hugh Masekela's instrumental version of 'Grazing in the Grass.'
It is a little bit of a cheesy song, but perhaps what he is most well known for here in the states. I saw him perform today in Central Park, and even at 72 he has a lot of life and joy in him and was a lot of fun to watch.
He led an interesting life in which he fled South Africa, ended up studying and playing trumpet in New York for years, before eventually returning to South Africa to reconnect with his roots and help build the community through music. He was even married to the South African singer/civil rights activist Miriam Makeba.
I haven't seen it yet, but I'm told that the documentary Amandla!, which is about using music for social change during Apartheid in South Africa and features both Makeba and Masekela, is excellent.
